How To Stand Up While Swimming

Learning how to stand up in the water in the middle of a swimming session is an essential skill. By learning how to stand in the water amidst swimming you’ll overcome the fear of water. This article contains detailed steps to help new beginners learn how to stand in water while floating on their backs or swimming on their bellies.

Being able to stand up on the pool floor while swimming will help beginners gain massive confidence. Mastering the standing position after swimming will lead to a recovery position where you can relax when you’re tired.

How To Stand in Water – Back Position / Face Up Position

When you’re on your back, the best thing you can do is to sit up in the water. It’s like you’re sitting up on your bed from a sleeping position. The first thing you should do to stand up from a back float is to drop your hips underneath your belly, bring your knees to your chest and pick your head up.

Pick your head up in the water, sink your hips and draw your knees to your chest.

Once you follow these steps, you will find that you can easily place your feet on the pool floor. Remember that this movement should be relaxed and smooth as you pull your knees to the chest. Pull your arms upward and forward and lift your head up to get into a standing position.

Key points in Step 1: Standing Up From Back Float Position

  • Pull both arms upward to the surface
  • Bend your knees like you want to sit
  • Lift your head and face forward
  • Place your feet flat on the ground

How To Stand in Water – Belly Down / Prone / Face Down Position

When you’re swimming face down (eg. freestyle), you should pull your knees to your chest first before performing any other step. Lift your head only after you bring your knees to your chest. In the prone position, hands and arms pull down while the knees come forward and upward. So, draw your knees to your chest first, then lift your head and press down on the water with your hands.

Knees to your chest, hands down & head up.

Don’t rush any of the movements. Most beginners fail to pull down and back with their hands and arch their back, leading to an unbalanced body position. Practice these steps with relaxed movements. Don’t forget to bend your knees first before doing any other step.

Key points in Step 2: Belly Down / Prone / Face Down Position

  • Draw your knees first to your chest
  • Pull down and back with both hands
  • Lift your head up
  • Place your feet flat on the ground

First practice standing up from your back position and then practice from the front position. Once you learn how to properly stand up in water amidst swimming, you will gain the confidence to swim in deeper water.
