Should you perform Scissor Kicks or Flutter Kicks?

As we can see in the above image that Ellie is performing “scissor kicks” in her backstroke. Because of this there are moments in her backstroke where she looks like she will stop completely and restart. The reason she is doing that is because of her kick. She has her scissor kick going on which causes her body to become unbalanced and therefore she needs to re-balance herself.
Instead, a more efficient and faster way to swim backstroke will be with a consistent “flutter kick”.  Take the water from beneath your feet and flip it up to the surface. You’ll know you are doing it right because it will look like you are boiling the water with your feet. It is also important to swim faster and be more stable in the water. Your feet and ankles should be loose and floppy like a fish tail.

What is Six Beat Kick Rhythm?

A fast flutter kick is usually accomplished with a six beat kick. That means you are going to kick 3 times when your right arm is stroking and kick 3 more times when your left arm is stroking. In short, swimmer should complete six kicks per stroke cycle or three kicks per single arm stroke. One downward kick should always be timed with the recovery of the opposite arm as it slices in to forward extension. This will aid both rotation and help the swimmer drive his momentum forward.
